Orwell Writing/Outline

Speaker: Educator or critic

Occasion: People are getting worse at writing

Audience: Writers, students, anybody who writes badly

Purpose: People sound dumb when using the four main subjects mentioned in the paper

Subject: Things people use in writings that make them sound bad

Ethos:

  • George Orwell shows quotes that are bad examples of the subject
    • All four of the quotes are prime examples of how not to write in the opinion of Orwell.

Pathos:

  •  Orwell uses emotion to show his frustration and opinion on writing.
    •   “It is easier- even quicker, once you have the habit- to say in my opinion it is a not unjustifiable assumption that than to say/think”

Logos

  • Orwell uses statistical evidence to show why the 4 examples in the beginning are badly written.
    • “Professor Laski (1) uses five negatives in 53 words.”
